I don’t know whether it’s because I was born in the 70s or I am still a kid at heart but I still find automatic garage doors cool. Like something out of Star Trek the way they open when prompted seems like something out of the future. Well 30 odd years on and I now work in the garage door industry (standby for gasps of shock!). In all honesty I did stumble into the profession and it wasn’t due to having an obsession with them for if I had a job involving something I am obsessed with I would most certainly be a couch potato!

I thought it would be a good idea to write a bit on how an automatic garage door is installed. Now I realise that this my not be the most thrilling of subjects however if like me you have had to put up with a temperamental automatic garage door braking down on you it is well worth knowing a thing or two.

Now before I begin it is well worth noting that if you are to install an automatic garage door then it is advisable to get a professional  garage door supplier to install it for you otherwise you may find yourself trying to force the thing to open as it is chucking it down with rain…been there done that and it is not nice!

Well on we go, and I won’t go into too much detail really but rather just the basics. To go into too much detail will confuse/bore/make you want to blow your brains out…so I won’t go there!

So to install an automatic garage door you need to:

•  Attach the track to the drive unit. The drive unit houses the motor and the motor is the part that does all the smoke and mirrors magic for you.

•  You then need to connect the rest of the sections of the track together.

•  The next step is to attach a mounting bracket to the track’s end, and then attach that to the beam above the garage door opening.

•  Once the above has been done you need to attach the motor according to the manufacturers instructions (so do not throw away the instruction manual when you buy one!). This must be attached to a beam in the ceiling because of its weight.

•  Attach the wires from the ceiling motor to the wall switch.

•  Then install the infrared sensors in front of the garage door so that it can detect your movement and open

•  Lastly connect your garage door to the door opener.

•  And voila! You have your nice new spanking garage door up and running.

There are a lot more niggly things involved but this is the basics. Knowing these little bits may help you if ever need to fix your/your neighbours/your sisters garage door, and who knows it may even help you if you decide to enter the world of garage door installation!

When you have an automatic garage door, it is quite difficult to open it without a garage door opener. It is especially difficult when you are in the car and you need to pull the car into the garage. You do not want to have to get out, open the door, get back into the car, and then pull it into the garage. You want to be able to push a button and the door open up. However, you do have to program that garage door opener to do the job.

You have two types of garage door openers. You have remote garage door openers and you have Homelink openers. Remote openers are your average remote control garage door opener that clips onto the visor in your car. The Homelink system is a garage door opener that is built into your car. There are manufacturers such as Audi that install Homelink systems within their cars.

Programming the traditional remote

How you program your traditional remote depends on the manufacturer. Just like a remote control that you are programming to go with your television, you may have certain numbers to punch or you may need to hit a certain combination of buttons. If you have a remote that has numbered keys on them, then you should be able to input the code and be on your way. If you have a garage door opener with just up and down buttons, you may have to press the buttons in a certain order.

Programming a Homelink System

You will be given instructions on how to program your Homelink system to the garage doors at your home. However, there are some generic programming instructions in case you need them. And what is great about Homelink is that it can be programmed in just a minute. Here is an example of programming instructions:

Press and hold the buttons on the outside. You will notice the diode will start flashing after 20 seconds.

Now you just need to hold the remote control to your garage door about 5 to 30 centimeters away from Homelink’s transmitter. This may take a few tries.

Next, you need to press your remote control’s button and the button on the Homelink system that you want to use for your garage door. However, do not release the button until you have completed the next step.

You will now notice that the diode will flash slow and then faster. When you see the rapid flashing, you will need to release the buttons. This means the programming has been successful.

The process is a very simple one. It is also a very quick one as you can see. Of course, how you program your Homelink system will vary. Not all of the buttons in all of the different car models look the same, but the concept is more or less the same. At least now you know that it does not take any extra special technological knowledge to get the job done.

From time to time the need will arise for garage doors to be replaced. Over a number of years, the doors on our garage can stiffen or even rust on the facia, which can leave the front of our home looking untidy and run down. At that stage, you know it’s time to replace your garage doors but going about can be a complicated and potentially costly procedure. Knowing how to go about buying garage doors can be tricky, let alone finding someone to install the doors, particularly given the range of alternatives available on the market. So how do you go about replacing old or worn out garage doors?

The first major decision that must be taken when replacing garage doors is whether or not to opt for manual or automatic mechanisms. That is, do you want a traditional garage door that requires to be opened by hand or are you looking for a garage that opens and closes automatically with the touch of a button? The latter can be an enjoyable luxury and can provide heightened security against the potential car thief, although it can also be considerably more expensive, particularly when labour and installation costs are factored in.

An essential consideration when replacing garage doors is installation. In other words, who is going to fit the door to your garage after you’ve bought it. Most retailers will offer the option of fitting the garage door and it is probably best that you avail yourself of that service – after all, fitting garage doors is something that requires experience and it is hard to find alternative workmen to do the job. Despite the markup on the labour costs, it is well worth paying for the installation in order to cut out any hassle or struggle on you after completing the purchase.

Whenever you buy a garage door, make sure that you have a substantial warranty on the door in the event that the mechanism fails or for damage resulting from an inherent defect. As a large item of expenditure, it’s important to make sure your garage door and its chosen mechanism are protected and that the quality is guaranteed to give you peace of mind and allow you to rest secure in the knowledge that your garage is safe, whatever the weather.

The garage door is an often underestimated security feature, and it is one which must both present to would-be criminals an imposing barrier whilst also appear tidy and attractive when situated at the front of your home for the benefit of property prices. Replacing those doors can never be mistaken for an easy process, but it needn’t be too complicated either so long as you choose the right supplier for your new door and can be guaranteed a sufficient warranty. By ensuring you make your decision wisely, you should be able to guarantee a smooth process from purchase to installation to use, without having to worry about the potential pitfalls that could otherwise arise.
