It is difficult to imagine owning a garage door without an automatic opener. Many people, however, start each day with manually unlocking, opening, and relocking their garage doors by hand. Installing a garage door opener is not a difficult process, but you may need a second set of hands for a few of the steps. If you are a veteran DIY type of person, you should be able to handle installing your own garage door opener in just a few hours. Follow these steps, and opening and closing your garage door will be as simple as pushing a button.

No matter what kit you have chosen to install, it should come with the same essential parts. Start by aligning the T rails so they are laid out in the proper sequence. Many of the top brands of garage door openers come with arrows on the T rails so lining them up in order should be a snap. You want to then bolt them together so they become all one piece. You want to then take the pulley and place it where it belongs in relation to the T rails and secure that in place, as well.

You want to find the trolley unit and slide it onto the rails. Once the trolley unit is in place, you can go ahead and finish bolting the rails to the opener unit that your kit came with. This next step can be a bit complicated. You want to use a screwdriver and slide it through one of the holes in the rails to hold the trolley in the same place. Begin to attach the belt or the chain to the trolley using the tools that came with your kit. You will want to then wrap the chain or the belt around the pulley and again around the sprocket on the open unit. You’ll want to finish this step by attaching the chain to the other side of the trolley unit.

The next part requires some measuring. Open your garage door to the highest possible point and measure it. Add on about 2 to 3 inches and mark it on your wall. Next, find the center of your door and make another mark on the wall. This is the spot where you want the header bracket to be installed. You may need to use a 2 by 4 if there are no wall studs in place at that point.

Next, take the pulley end of your assembly and attach it to the bracket above the door. Use a ladder to raise the entire assembly to near the tracks of your door. Now take care to open the door and lift your garage door opener so it is 2 inches above the open door. Make sure you use shims here.

Use lag screws to attach the molding bracket to the ceiling of your garage. Attach your garage door opener unit to the bracket. At this point, install the garage door controls and the electric eye censors. Finish by installing the brackets by the door. Before you know it, you will be completely finished and opening and closing your garage door with ease.

Of all the mechanical devices that you will find around and on your home the one item that is most likely to require maintenance is your overhead garage door. The reason for this is simple. Its not that they are poorly made, but rather its due to the amount of moving parts contained in them and the constant heavy use that they endure.

Obtaining Parts in the Local Community

Its not just the overhead doors themselves that can malfunction, but the motorized automatic garage door openers as well. Being that there are so many in use in neighborhoods around the globe, one would think that obtaining parts for them in the local community would be a breeze.

Special Order Parts

Unfortunately, this is not always the case and often times when the parts are available locally, finding the exact part or parts that you need can be a hassle. This means that something as simple as a roller for your door assembly, or a simple part for the motorized opener can often turn out to be a “special order” part with a high price tag and an extended wait.

Get the Part Number

The good news, is that now there are numerous online sources for virtually any part that you may need for your overhead garage door or the motorized unit on the ceiling. However; before you begin your online search for the part that you need, you must first obtain the part number.

Access the Companies Website

To do this, simply go to the companies website and access an exploded schematic diagram of the garage door or the mechanical garage door that you have. Once you have identified the part, you can then obtain the part number. Also, there are now online sites that sell used home appliance parts as well, that may have what you need at a discount price.

Garage door openers can be operated either by a garage door remote or by an outdoor keypad where you punch in your code to open or close the garage door. It doesn’t provide the actual lifting power to open and close a heavy garage door, because most of the actual lifting power comes from the counterbalance springs that are under tension to lift the garage door via steel counterbalance cables. The garage door opener only controls how far the door opens and closes, as well as the force the garage door exerts. In most cases, the garage door opener also acts as a lock.

Over the years, the garage door opener continuously improved to feature automatic courtesy lights that turn on when the door opens (or via motion sensors) and automatically turn off after a preset time delay. Some also come with a remote lockout feature, which turns off the radio receiver while one is on vacation or away for an extended time. Accessories such as wireless keypads and key chain remotes are already made available. Different mechanical drives have also been developed for garage door openers. Newer systems allow for the door to be moved with very little force and the door can also be stopped in partially open positions.

Some garage door openers already come with a fingerprint-based wireless keypad. This unit attaches to the outside of the garage door on the jamb and allows users to open and close their doors with the press of a finger, rather than creating a personal identification number (PIN). This is especially helpful for families and individuals who have a hard time remembering so many passwords or codes. More sophisticated garage door openers come with integrated carbon monoxide sensor to open the door in case of the garage being flooded with exhaust fumes. Other systems allow door activation over the Internet to allow home owners to open their garage door from their office for deliveries. However, this feature violates Underwriters Laboratories (or UL) safety codes that state the door must be in the line-of-sight of the person operating the door for safety reasons.

Apart from convenience, garage door openers also offer a certain amount of security and safety because they keep your garage door shut unless opened by the garage door remote or by punching in your code on the keypad. This ensures that all the stuff you have kept in the garage remains safe from intruders and thieves. Genie garage door openers are America’s number one garage doors opener brand. Every Genie garage door opener is designed for strength, security and longevity. Making access easier is our goal to ensure the finest quality garage door opener ever made. Garage doors shouldn’t be an afterthought on your home; rather, they should be viewed as an extension of it. Not only does it increase curb appeal, it improves security and adds value to your home.

Defining CCTV and Automated Garage Doors

CCTVs are basically cameras that you can install in different parts of your home, even right in your garage. You can program it to record for hours every day, as well as save the videos so you can check on them anytime you want to. One of the greatest advantages of CCTVs is that they provide you of real information: how things happened, who went into your home, and even what happened after.

If someone breaks into your home, for example, you just need to check on your CCTV and see if you have captured the burglar’s face. In Great Britain, these types of surveillance cameras are very popular, and in fact, it has somehow lessened the criminal rate in the country.

Automated garage doors, meanwhile, give you more control. Majority of the burglars either hide or pass by the garage door, before they can enter into your home. You can set up security codes, which only you or your family members know about. You can also set it up that it wouldn’t happen unless you turn it on.

Maintaining CCTV and Garage Doors

Because they are usually used for security, you must make sure that they are always running properly. You should learn the ways on how to maintain them. Here are some tips below:

1. Test the equipment regularly: When you have a CCTV camera installed in your home, make it a habit to check it at least one hour every day. See if it can still capture the right angles, or if the images still appear very clear. When it comes to your garage door openers, ensure that you can close and open them at your own pace.

2. Clean them at all times: This is especially true with your surveillance cameras. A lot of people believe that the blurred images are caused by some internal technical problems. Perhaps all you need to do is to grab a tissue and clean the lens. The closed-circuit system also has to be cleaned at all times to ensure that there will be no dust that will accumulate into the equipment. They can sometimes cause technical glitches.

3. Obtain professional services: A garage door repair is usually something that you can do on your own. There are plenty of DIY tips that you can find in the World Wide Web. However, if the problem seems to be far more complicated, you may want to hire a professional garage door opener repair services. They have the knowledge, expertise, and experience, which will ensure you of high-quality work.

With surveillance cameras and a fully functional garage door, you will be able to sleep soundly at night, and you can lessen down your worries for you and your family’s safety.

If you own a home with a garage door more than likely you will also have some kind of automatic garage door opener

Jim Kesel

If you own a home with a garage door more than likely you will also have some kind of automatic garage door opener. If your contractor installed the door opener when your home was built in most cases it was the cheapest model available. Using garage doors pricing to select a garage door opener is usually not a good idea. Frequently these automatic garage door openers begin to fail within a few short years. Not having a quality garage door opener installed in your garage will not only lead to an inconvenient failure but also could put your home and family at risk.

Genie garage doors openers have been around for a long time and have set the standard for automatic garage door openers. There are probably more Genie garage doors openers in American homes than in any other brand of automatic garage door opener. They manufacture a full line of home garage door openers including several models that can easily installed by just about any home owner.

You can find Genie garage doors openers for sale in most of the big box home improvement stores including Home Depot and Lowes. The staff of each of these retailers will help you decide what garage door opener you need and provide helpful information on installation. In most cases you can install your genie garage doors opener within 3 hours if you have the assistance of a second person. A single person can also install a garage door opener in about 4 hours. In most cases installation will only require regular household tools to accomplish.

In addition these home improvement stores will also arrange for professional installation if desired. In most cases unless you are going to need several wired keypads a professional installer will complete the job of installation in less than an hour. Genie garage doors opener systems feature wireless keypad systems that make installation very simple. The Genie Homelink and Intellicode one systems will assure that your garage will not be opened by thieves. Every time the garage door is operated the operational code is changed and there are more than 4 billion different combinations so it is unlikely that someone will be able to access your garage with a remote scanning device.

The Genie Excellerator garage doors opener will open your garage at twice the speed of a conventional garage door opener. This is a great feature if you are worried about security. Instead of waiting for your garage door to open the Excellerator will open fast enough to allow you to continue move your vehicle into the garage without stopping.

Unfortunately the major flaw in the system is that it only closes the door at normal speed allowing an intruder to enter the garage before the door closes. No doubt that this feature was fostered by some idiot company attorney that was worried about liability. I guess they figure that it is much better to be murdered by an intruder than be foolishly hit by a closing garage door.

In general you will find that Genie garage doors openers are a great way to efficiently open and close your garage doors. We would have preferred to have a way of integrating the system into the home security system. Never the less we do recommend Genie garage doors openers for your home.
